The issue is caused by your firewall. I had the same problem for nearly two weeks.

Increasing the timeout allows your firewall more time to scan the packets from the live update server.

Another solution is to whitelist or write an exception for outbound traffic from your server's IP address.

The liveupdate.settings file also has records for HOST which seem to also point to what may be old corporate liveupdate servers. Find a computer that has working settings and replace the lines beginning with HOST from that file into the file on the system with the issue. That resolved my issues with this error.

Can someone describe in more detail how to locate the setting.liveupdate file, how to open it, how to save it etc. I've tried to open it with Word, but it won't let me save it in the same location...
I don't know much about computers, so the simpler, the better. I'm having trouble with the LU1835 time-out message and would love to know how exactly to increase the default time-out. Please help! Thanks so much!

uDay it is easy to fix this. In the Liveupdate folder, right click setting.liveupdate and select Properties. Uncheck the 'Read Only' box and click Apply. You can now save the file again - remember to change the permission back to 'Read Only' and clicking 'Apply' again.

NARAYANAN's solution gives hope. But where can I find the flg:

a) \All users\Application Data\Symantec\Liveupdate folder
b) in setting.liveupdate file, correct the following sentences

preferences\internet_connect_timeout = (increase default time)
preferences\internet_read_data_timeout = (increase default time)

Do you have in your folder options "do not show hidden folders checked under folder options? To this go under my computer and at the top left corner under tools, folder options, view, you will have to check "show hidden files and folders". Hope this helps.
